One day in the spring of 1987, while at BYU, a friend came to me and handed me a piece of material and said something like - I need a temple bag that is chic and elegant - not Molly Mormon looking. I want you to make me a temple bag and I want you to use this material - So that night (my roommate worked nights) I laid the material out on the floor and played around with some different configurations that I thought would work. I started cutting and sewing and the first TempleTote was made. She loved it since it fit everything and kept her dress from being wadded up and wrinkled in a suitcase.
The next year, I opened a bridal shop in Provo with this same friend and sewed many, many dresses that first year. We also sold the TempleTotes in our shop. We were young and really didn't know the first thing about having a store and I was sewing 18 hours a day most days. It was crazy and it was fun and it was stressful all at once.
Fast forward to 2012, I was at the Oakland LDS Temple and a friend noticed my bag and asked me where I got it. I told her that I had made it, and I had designed it years ago. I had made several for wedding gifts and such over the years but hadn't really marketed the totes. She said - "Heather, you need to sell these bags and I want one too!"
I made her a tote and started my ETSY.com store that same month.
Now we have sold almost 2000 totes and ship worldwide!
